The workshop

Gunjur, and the road out

Saidou has been repairing cars in Serekunda for over fifteen years. The workshop sits in Gunjur, on the southern edge of the Kombo, and most of the work happens somewhere else entirely — a compound in Kanifing, a car park behind a shop in Latrikunda, a car that gave up on the Brikama highway.

It started with one toolbox and a motorbike. These days there is a van, a proper set of tools, a diagnostic reader, and two other mechanics who work with him. What has not changed is the way a job gets quoted: we look, we tell you what is wrong, we tell you what the parts cost, and only then do we start.

Most customers are regulars — taxi drivers, market traders, families with one car that has to keep running. That is the whole reason the phone line stays open seven days a week.
